From the early stages of World War II, the German army began to equip their Panzergrenadiers with armoured half-tracks that would support their panzers in action. They developed the excellent Sd.Kfz 251 series, made by Hanomag, and steadily produced them in their thousands, with over twenty versions seeing service in most theatres of the war.

One of the most useful variants was the 8cm Granatwerfer – a version of the Hanomag carrying the standard infantry mortar. The mortar could be moved around the battlefield quickly and in reasonable safety, its armour shrugging off most infantry weapons and shrapnel. The mortar was most commonly removed from the half-track to engage the enemy, however, in extremis, it could fire from the safety of the vehicle.

A full load of 66 rounds of 81mm mortar rounds were carried, with more shells available from supply trucks or towed trailers.

This model represents the 251/2 Ausf D version of the vehicle (it had a simplified armour shape from the earlier Ausf C, particularly obvious was the sloped rear Armour) that was in use from 1943 onwards in most theatres. This variant featured a forward-facing 81mm mortar in the rear, tactically spot on for attacking and moving position frequently.

The world's first paratroopers to be used in large numbers, the German Fallschirmjager were at the tip of the spear when war broke out in 1939. They led daring assaults on strategic targets, such as the fortress at Eben Emael, enabling the following panzers to overrun Europe.

As a paratrooper force the Fallschirmjager's greatest achievement would be the intense fighting they performed as they seized Crete in the face of more numerous British and Commonwealth forces during 1941. This pyrrhic victory meant that they were never again used en masse.

Small units still operated by glider and parachute, famously rescuing Italian leader Mussolini, and raiding behind American lines in the Ardennes. Their finest hour would undoubtly be the bitter fighting as they occupied the monastery at Monte Cassino for months in the face of overwhelming odds, earning themselves the nickname 'Green Devils'. The German Paratroopers were arguably the toughest in a tough army.

The KV-85 was a stopgap concept, utilising KV-1S hull mated to a turret previously designed for the KV-13 ‘universal tank’ concept, armed with the powerful D5-T 85mm cannon. Designed to address concerns that the well-armoured KV-1 lacked the firepower to deal with larger German tanks, the KV-85 was only produced in small numbers, but proved a dangerous foe for Panthers and Tigers.

Breda M37 Medium Machine Gun Team (0-5 per Heavy Weapons Platoon):

The most successful and most commonly used machine gun in Italian service was the Breda M37 8mm air-cooled weapon. A medium machine gun team is capable of laying down a withering hail of fire, the bane of enemy infantry caught out in the open.

Medium Mortar team (0-5 per Heavy Weapons Platoon):

Like so many nations, the Italian Army made good use of mortars, such as the Mortaio da 81/14 Modello. A medium mortar lobs shells high over the battlefield. Inaccurate at first, they range in over the course of a game, provided their targets don’t move, of course.

The US Marine Corps introduced war dog platoons in 1943. Dogs first took part in the Bougainville operation in November, and went on to support US Marine forces at Guam and Peleliu in 1944, and Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945. The majority of the dogs used were Doberman Pinschers and the remainder German Shepherds. Dogs were trained as scout dogs or messenger dogs. Scout dogs alerted their handlers to the presence of enemy positions, ambushes and hidden snipers, and proved very effective in this role – often alerting troops to the presence of enemy machine gun nests or sniper positions before they came under fire. Other dogs were trained to carry messages between Marine units. Again they proved more effective than runners, although often coming under fire or even suffering wounds in the course of duty.

At the outbreak of war, the QF 2-pdr (QF stands for ‘quickfiring’) was the standard anti-tank gun of the British Army. It was an adequate weapon for the time, being slightly more effective in terms of armour penetration then the contemporary German 37mm PaK 36. It was, however, larger and heavier and employed an unusual carriage that required the wheels to be removed before it could fire. Against the early panzers, light vehicles and the poorly armoured Japanese tanks it did well and was popular, meeting success in France, North Africa and the Far East.

Snipers were armed with a SMLE No.4 Rifle equipped with a No.32 Mk.1 telescopic sight. The team carried fifty rounds of ammunition, five tracer rounds and five armour-piercing rounds. Two No.36 Mills bombs or two No.77 smoke grenades were also carried, along with binoculars and a camouflage net.

Panzerbüchse is German for ‘anti-tank rifle’ but the sPzB 41 was effectively a small anti-tank gun with its own carriage and crew. This remarkable gun was designed on the ‘squeeze bore’ principle, with the bore reducing from 28mm to 20mm, propelling the shell to a much higher velocity than with a conventional anti-tank gun. This, combined with tungsten core ammunition, gave the sPzB 41 remarkable armour penetration at short ranges – though performance dropped off rapidly.

A variety of rifles were used for sniping, including the standard KAR-98K and the semi-automatic Gewehr 43, all fitted with the high quality ZF39 telescopic sight, and equipped with precision-manufactured ammunition.

Much like their Soviet counterparts, the CCP Army learned the valued lessons of massed assaults with submachine guns. In a PVA rifle company, two submachine squads were in the company headquarters, providing firepower when needed. These submachine gun squads served as scouts, point security, lead in the attack, and could also be divided out if the commander needed. A mix of weapons were issued, the standard PPSh and the US Thompson submachine gun from WWII.

The only American combat use of the M46 Patton was during the Korean War. On 8 August 1950, the first M46 Patton tanks, belonging to the 6th Tank Battalion, landed in South Korea. The M46 proved to be capable against North Korean T-34 medium tanks.

Though the Armaments Board designated the M46 a 'medium' tank, its capabilities equaled those of the M26 Pershing. Sporting a similar 90mm gun (though enhanced a little), the M46 didn't lack firepower. The deployment of the M46 enabled the Pershings to be withdrawn.

The M46 proved a critical component in the defence of the Pusan perimeter during 1950. Subsequently, it was used at Inchon to support the US Marine amphibious landings. Replaced by the M47 (developed in 1952), its US combat service was limited to the Korean War.

The M46 Patton comes to Bolt Action Korea as a powerful addition to any US force in the Korean war. Its main weapon is gyro-stabilized, providing a great boon to any experienced tank crew!

Infantry weapons teams are a key component of any Bolt Action army, providing as they do great tactical flexibility for your force. Light mortar teams, flamethrower teams and anti-tank teams are among the most prevalent, presenting your opponent with multiple challenges to overcome.

While the anti-tank rifle soon fell out of favour in other armies, the KPA used them and received their training from the Soviet advisors attached to their units. The PTRD 14.5 mm was a single shot weapon effective to nearly 500 yards, penetrating approximately 1.5 inches of armour. The PTRS 14.5 mm was slightly better, featuring a five-round magazine. In the later part of the war antitank rifles were more often used against lighter targets such as armoured cars, half-tracks, trucks, and entrenched positions. In the North Korean Army an ATR Squad was led by an NCO and consisted of three anti-tank rifles with a gunner and loader for each.

The KPA made great use of flamethrowers including FOG-1 static types dug in to cover bunkers and trenches. Due to shortcomings in developing other credible antitank weapons, doctrine placed strong emphasis on using flamethrowers as anti-tank as well as anti-infantry weapons. By far the most common KPA flamethrowers were the man-packed ROKS types. The ROKS-2 was designed with a fuel tank looking like an ordinary backpack and a nozzle resembling a rifle, so as not to attract unwelcome attention on the battlefield.

The standard light mortar used by KPA is the same the Soviet infantry operated during World War II; the 50mm Infantry Mortar Model 1940 (50-PM 40), a cheaper version of the earlier Model 1938. The 50mm was deemed a ‘company’ mortar as opposed to the heavier 82mm battalion and 120mm regimental mortars. The allocation of 50mm mortars was initially to individual teams at platoon level, but later they were more often concentrated together at company level for use en masse. The weapon was easily man-portable and could lay down high explosive or smoke bombs at a range of over 800 yards.

The Chinese used flamethrowers in relatively large numbers during the early battles of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The success of the weapon system demonstrated the effectiveness in pushing defenders out of a fortified position. Flamethrowers were sourced from Germany and later from the Western Allies, the Soviet Union, and captured from the Japanese. Flamethrower teams may be used in an infantry squad or an Engineer squad as an attachment.

The 2.36” American Bazooka was easily copied and widely used during and after WWII. The older and original version was very effective against the tanks and fortifications of the Chinese Civil War but near useless against heavier US tanks. The Bazooka could still take out or damage the M24 Chaffee and the various M4 Shermans.

The PVA had a variety of light mortars ranging from the Soviet 50mm mortar to the captured Japanese Type 10 and Type 89 knee mortars. Later in the war the Chinese made a very effective copy of the US 60mm mortar. Each Rifle Company had three 60mm mortars to form a single platoon battery.

Infantry weapons teams are a key component of any Bolt Action army, providing as they do great tactical flexibility for your force. Sniper teams, anti-tank teams and flamethrower teams are among the most prevalent, presenting your opponent with multiple challenges to overcome.

British forces were armed with 2-inch mortar for close support purposes. Two men were needed to operate it. An NCO was responsible for carrying and firing the weapon while the other carried ammunition. Weighing less than 11Ibs and offering an effective range of 500 yards, these mortars were quick to manoeuvre and deploy as needed.

Snipers were armed with a SMLE No.4 Rifle equipped with a No.32 Mk.1 telescopic sight. The team carried fifty rounds of ammunition, five tracer round and fiver-armour-piercing rounds. Two No.36 Mills bombs or two No.77 smoke grenades were also carried, along with binoculars and a camouflage net.

The portable flamethrower available to British forces was the Ack Pack. At a weight of 64Ibs, the Ack Packs could be carried and operated by one man. Fully loaded, the Ack Pack was capable of ten bursts each of a two second duration. With a range of fifty yards it was a truly fearsome weapon that excelled in clearing bunkers and buildings.

On 14 May 1940, Britain’s Secretary of State for War Anthony Eden made a broadcast calling for men between the ages of 17 and 65 to enrol in a new force, the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV) to defend the country against the expected German invasion of Britain. By July, nearly 1.5 million men had enrolled - far outreaching the 150,000 the Government expected to volunteer.

This set contains a 10-man section equipped with various improvised weaponry, with additional firearms and Molotov cocktails.

Beginning life as a rag-tag militia, the LDV initially had to make do without uniforms, wearing a simple armband bearing the organisations initials. The LDV similarly struggled for modern weaponry - shotguns and improvised weapons such as golf clubs, crowbars and industrial tools were not uncommon. The LDV evolved into the Home Guard, becoming a well-equipped and well-drilled force.

Disparagingly referred to as ‘Look, Duck & Vanish’, the LDV were renamed to the more inspiring Home Guard. Although the German invasion of their country didn’t materialise this proud people’s army - the original ‘Dad’s Army’ continued to stand until it was disbanded in late 1945.

The Type 2 Ka-Mi Amphibious Tank was the first amphibious tank of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). It was based on the Imperial Japanese Army's Type 95 Ha-Go light tank with major modifications. It first saw combat service during the Guadalcanal campaign in late 1942.

Although obsolete in the European theatre, the A12 Matilda II infantry tank’s heavy armour and proven weaponry were ideal against the lightly equipped Japanese forces in the Far East.

The nature of the terrain precluded the large armoured formations experienced in North Africa. Instead, the Matilda-equipped Australian 4th Armoured Brigade was broken up and deployed as individual troops of three tanks in direct support to the infantry.

The Australians made several field conversions to the standard A12 Matilda II, the two main additions being armoured guards fitted to the front tracks and protection against the turret ring becoming a shot trap.

The Matilda Frog was a terrifying weapon, firing gouts of pressurised flame. Needing a 20-second pause between shots while the pressure built up again, it required close infantry support to prevent the tank being overrun by the enemy.
